Revitalisasi Benteng Amsterdam Sebagai Museum Sejarah dan Icon Kebudayaan Maluku

Sholeh Hadri, Bambang Erwin

Abstract

This proposal presents the revitalization of Benteng Amsterdam, a historic colonial fortress located in Desa Hila, Ambon, Maluku, transforming it into a museum and cultural hub that embodies the rich history and identity of the Maluku Islands. Built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch, the fortress is an important testament to the spice trade and colonial history. Despite its historical significance, the fortress has not been fully utilized for educational, cultural, or tourism purposes. This project aims to preserve its architectural integrity while introducing new functions, such as a history museum showcasing the region’s spice trade and colonial past, and a cultural center for Maluku’s performing arts, music, and traditions. The revitalization will adopt a contextual architectural approach, ensuring that modern functions are integrated in a way that respects the historical and cultural context of the site. This includes using local materials, optimizing the building for the tropical climate, and incorporating sustainable design principles. The project also focuses on enhancing the site's role as a cultural identity landmark for Maluku, fostering a deeper connection between the community and their heritage. Additionally, the revitalization is expected to stimulate local tourism, create economic opportunities, and become an educational resource for both locals and visitors. Ultimately, Benteng Amsterdam will be revived as a functional, living space that reflects Maluku's past and present, making it a valuable asset for the region's future
